Urban homesteading is simply homesteading without the benefit of a large amount of land, such as in the city. Some of the ways people practice urban homesteading is by...
I Think I Ripped My Pants
The title may sound like a tale from the popular kid's show SpongeBob SquarePants however it has a certain ring of truth to it when it comes to survival. Surviving in the wild can be rough not only on the individual but also upon the persons clothing. Add to that the amount of dirt that could be collected from a romp in the woods and the poor washing conditions and your clothing is certainly not going to last that long. If you are in the wild for any kind of time at all you will surely need to mend your clothing and as such you well need the use of a sewing kit of some sort. As...

Unfortunately, with man's great fabric inventions often comes an amount of difficulty that requires some practice to make perfect. Many sewing projects that you encounter will have you sewing 2 panels of fabric together... creating a seam. Unless you have a serger, the edges of your seam are going to be ragged... and possibly unraveling. Now, if you're sewing a lined drapery panel or sewing a pillow... a sewing project where the seams will end up being hidden, then the ragged edges are no big deal. But what if you plan on sewing a sheer drapery panel? Those seams would look unsightly. What do you do? You sew a french seam instead. A french seam is a seam that encloses the raw edges into itself. Here are a few tips and ideas when sewing with fusible thread. Fill a bobbin (slowly) or use it in your lower looper to simplify multiple tasks. Fusible thread creates a temporary bond to hold things in place while you complete the permanent stitching. It should not be used alone to make permanent seams. For perfect bias binding, use fusible thread in the bobbin. Use a zigzag stitch to join the binding to the garment or quilt. Fold the bias over the edge. Press the edge (do not iron) lightly to enclose it and fuse in place. Now, you can stitch-in-the-ditch or well of the seam to make perfect binding every time. Install centered zippers easily. Stitch down both sides of the back of the zipper tape...

Americans have a tendency to make their history a bit more colorful and happy than it probably was for those early settlers. Because of the lack of resources it is likely that if one of the woman did make a quilt, it was probably a very simple quilt, because of the lack of fabric or even patterns. Thus, the quilters at that time were probably not really even quilters, rather just women who sewed out of necessity. But since they did sew, they still deserve to be described as the first American quilters. By the time the women had all of their chores and rearing duties finished, it was probably well after dark and the only light source would have been from a candle or the fireplace, which would have...
